Senior citizens, their families and friends are invited to take part in indoor activities slated for Senior Day on Monday at Springfield's Illinois State Fair, sponsored by the Illinois Department on Aging (IDoA).

Admission to the fair will be free for all attendees aged 60 or over for the day. The special events are planned for inside the air-conditioned Illinois Building located near the fairground’s main entrance.

“We always look forward to participating in the Illinois State Fair,” IDoA Director Jean Bohnhoff said. “Thanks to our innovative staff and partner agencies, our activities are … fun and informative. They provide families with an opportunity to bond over entertaining games while learning more about the various programs and services available to older adults and their families through our department.”

Returning due to popular demand will be the “NOT SO Newlywed Game,” and the Illinois regional senior Spelling Bee State Finals.

Many health-screening opportunities will also be available, including blood pressure, cholesterol and bone density tests and informational assessments.

For multi-generational fun, IDoA also plans a grandparent/grandchild contest at 2 p.m. Thursday, also in the Illinois Building. Contestants will be judged on resemblance, costumes, talent and interviews, with cash prizes awarded.

To register for activities or for more information, call 217-524-6911 or 800-252-8966. Event sponsors include Springfield Supportive Living, Central Illinois Senior Celebration, the Association of Illinois Senior Centers and Humana, along with many organizations providing information about their services and programs.
