The Northwest Side GOP Club, a Chicago-based lobbying group for conservative politicians, has pulled support from Gov. Bruce Rauner's re-election campaign after he approved a law to fund abortions with public money.
The group released a statement condemning Rauner’s decision.
“The Northwest Side GOP Club is disturbed by the signing of HB40 into law,” the group said on its NWSGOP website. “This bill expands the use of taxpayer dollars to pay for abortions through Medicaid. It forces us to pay for abortions for any reason and at any point in time during pregnancy, including the third trimester.”
Amanda Biela, GOP candidate for 15th district state representative.
The statement goes on to say the new legislation could cost the state an additional $20 million annually.
The group said it would issue no further petitions for Rauner and instead focus its energy on the campaigns of Amanda Biela and Ammie Kessem, who are running for state representative spots in the 15th and 19th districts, respectively.
