Illinois State Rep. Bradley Stephens (R-Chicago) shared his frustration with gas prices in a Facebook post Tuesday.

"Gas prices in Illinois have dropped in the last month, but they are still significantly higher than the national average," Stephens wrote in the post.

The average cost of a gallon of regular gas in Illinois is $5.106 as of Wednesday, according to the American Automobile Association (AAA), up from $3.338 one year ago. The national average is $4.631. The highest recorded average in Illinois was $5.562 on June 13. In Cook County, gas prices average $5.564 per gallon.

"Today’s report is a reminder that inflation is too high – fighting inflation is my top economic priority,” President Joe Biden wrote in tweet Wednesday. “And while the numbers today are not acceptable, they are also outdated. In the past 30 days, the average price of gas has dropped by 40 cents a gallon."

The Bureau of Labor Statistics issued its latest Consumer Price Index (CPI) summary Wednesday, which found costs have risen 9.1% in the last year, marking a 40-year high. The cost of energy increased 7.5%, gas prices rose 11.2%, and the cost of food increased by 1%. In the last year, the cost of gas has risen 59.9%, while food prices have increased 10.4%.
