The Hounds have announced a contract extension with Kian Meadon, a versatile player capable of playing both flyhalf and fullback. Meadon, originally from South Africa, joined the Hounds on May 9, 2024, after two seasons with the Houston Sabercats. He has since added depth to the team's backline.
Meadon's first appearance for Chicago was in week 15 against the Dallas Jackals. During that game, he played for 59 minutes and scored three points by converting one of his two penalty kick attempts. His performance included carrying the ball four times for a total of 32 meters and completing two out of three tackle attempts.
In the previous season, Meadon appeared in two games for Houston, starting both and spending 173 minutes on the field. He scored nine points through three conversion kicks and one penalty attempt while successfully completing 16 out of 17 tackles.
In his debut year in Major League Rugby (MLR) in 2022, Meadon was loaned to Rugby Atlanta by the Sabercats. That season saw him make eight appearances with seven starts over more than 500 minutes on the field. He managed seven conversion attempts and two penalty kicks along with scoring a try, totaling 25 points.
The contract extension positions Meadon as a key competitor for playing time alongside new additions Tim Swiel, Ben Pollack, and Sam Walsh. Adriaan Carelse is also expected to return following a successful year in 2024.
Meadon hails from Paarl in South Africa's Western Cape region. Before joining MLR, he advanced through South Africa's national age-grade system and played for both their Under-18 and Under-20 teams at World Rugby’s U20 Championship. Additionally, he participated in Cell C Sharks’ U18 and U20 programs.
