Chicago Public Schools has reported that over 77,000 laptops and other electronic devices, originally valued at more than $20 million, were either missing or stolen during the 2021-2022 academic year. The school district's post-coronavirus inventory revealed an "unacceptably high percentage of technology devices as lost or stolen, based on a flawed inventory and recovery process in need of a serious overhaul."
