The City of Chicago has been recognized as a Visionary Digital Inclusion Trailblazer by the National Digital Inclusion Alliance (NDIA) for 2025. This marks the fourth consecutive year that Chicago has received this honor, highlighting its ongoing efforts to promote digital equity and reduce disparities in digital access.
Mayor Brandon Johnson commented on the significance of the recognition, stating, “Digital access is no longer a luxury, it is essential to opportunity, education, and economic security. Chicago’s fourth consecutive Visionary Trailblazer designation reflects our unwavering commitment to making sure every Chicagoan, in every neighborhood, can fully participate in today’s digital world.”
The NDIA’s Digital Inclusion Trailblazers program evaluates local governments across the United States on their efforts to foster digitally inclusive communities. Those awarded Visionary Trailblazer status are recognized for deeply integrating digital inclusion strategies into government operations and community initiatives.
Chicago’s approach includes increasing high-speed internet availability, enhancing partnerships with local organizations, offering digital skills training programs, and developing policies that support technology access for all residents. These actions have positioned Chicago as a leading example nationally for other cities working toward similar goals.
Director of Digital Equity Christian Taylor noted the collaborative nature of these achievements: “Digital inclusion is essential to full participation in today’s economy and society. This recognition honors the work of our residents, community partners, and City departments who have collectively built systems and services that help people connect, learn, work, and thrive in the digital age.”
Being included among NDIA’s Visionary Trailblazers allows Chicago to share its strategies and experiences with other municipalities aiming to advance digital equity. The city will also host NDIA’s 2026 Net Inclusion Conference on the Chicago Riverwalk in February 2026.
The NDIA supports these initiatives by providing resources and advocacy aimed at closing gaps in internet access across the United States through programs like Digital Inclusion Trailblazers.
