The Chicago Office of Emergency Management and Communications (OEMC) announced on Mar. 31 that the Chicago White Sox home opener at Rate Field will take place on Thursday, April 2 at 3:10 p.m. against the Toronto Blue Jays. The OEMC is reminding fans, residents, and businesses to expect increased crowds, traffic impacts, and parking restrictions around the stadium.

This announcement is important as large events can impact public safety and daily routines in surrounding neighborhoods. The city urges attendees to remain vigilant in crowds and report any suspicious activity to onsite security or by calling 9-1-1. “If You See Something Say Something” remains a key message from OEMC as part of a national anti-terrorism campaign.

On game day, parking lots will open three hours before first pitch and gates two hours prior. For other games this season, lots open two hours ahead of time with gates opening ninety minutes before start time. Road closures are planned for nearby streets including periodic closures on 35th Street before and after the game. Fans are encouraged to arrive early due to expected high attendance for both the opener and promotional days.

Fans should also be aware that an authorized drone will be used for filming during the event. Strict bag policies remain in effect: only single-compartment clear tote bags of specified sizes, clutch purses within size limits, or diaper bags when accompanying an infant are allowed inside; backpacks are not permitted.

To ensure public safety throughout the season, there will be increased police presence enforcing liquor laws and prohibiting unlicensed vending or unauthorized sale of residential parking passes around Rate Field. Public transportation options include extra service from Chicago Transit Authority trains—Red Line stops near Sox-35th Street station—and Metra’s Rock Island line at 35th Street east of Dan Ryan Expressway.

For emergencies inside the ballpark, fans can text concerns to a designated number so staff can respond quickly; emergency exits should be noted by all attendees in case evacuation becomes necessary due to severe weather conditions forecasted for opening day.

OEMC encourages downloading its app for emergency alerts, transit information, street closure updates, weather reports and features like CHI Safe Walk sharing. STOP THE BLEED trauma kits have been installed throughout Rate Field through a partnership between OEMC and the White Sox as part of their Safe Chicago initiative—each kit includes access to online training via QR code stickers.

According to the official website, OEMC enhances community resilience through education programs focused on severe weather preparedness; it protects life and property through incident management technology support; it maintains an all-hazard alert warning system using a single audible tone during emergencies; extends operations across major city events; collaborates with federal partners such as Homeland Security for coordinated responses; and provides services including emergency response via 9-1-1 calls along with non-emergency support through its hotline.
