Hair​ston, Calloway headed to April run-off election in Chicago’s 5th Ward alderman race

Leslie A. Hairston and William Calloway will participate in a run-off election on April 2 to see who will serve as Chicago’s 5th Ward alderman after voters failed to elect a clear winner on Tuesday.

With 40 of 41 precincts reporting, Hairston received 6,036 votes, or 49.12 percent of the overall vote. Calloway came in second with 3,259 votes (26.52 percent), according to the Chicago Board of Elections. 

Under Chicago election laws, a run-off election is required if no candidate garners at least 50 percent of the votes.

Chicago has 1,581,755 registered voters, but only 530,797 (33.56 percent) cast ballots on Tuesday, which was a near record low turnout. There were a total of 12,228 votes cast in the Ward 5 alderman race. 

All results from Tuesday’s vote are unofficial until certified by the election board on March 13.
