Alicia Nieves of Compact said on Feb. 16, 2026, that the Democratic Party cannot moderate because progressive advocacy groups exert outsized influence over candidate selection, policy, and discipline at state and local levels, pushing out moderates and enforcing ideological conformity.

The topic is significant as it addresses ongoing debates about the direction of the Democratic Party and the role of internal party dynamics in shaping political representation. According to Nieves in an article for Compact Magazine, progressive organizations increasingly control candidate vetting and policy enforcement at state and local levels. She said this has led to primary defeats for lawmakers who diverge from party positions on issues such as transgender rights or border security, citing examples in Texas, Florida, Illinois, and California where national ideological priorities often outweigh local voter preferences in working-class districts.

“The Democratic Party has veered so far left, so deep into the progressive abyss… This is not the party I grew up with… I have witnessed firsthand how the so-called liberal left now stifles thoughtful debate, silencing dissent with an iron fist demanding blind allegiance to ideology, where one must comply or be cast out… There is little room within todays party for genuine moderation,” Nieves said according to Compact Magazine.

Recent events illustrate these trends. The Texas Tribune reported that Texas State Rep. Shawn Thierry lost her primary runoff to Lauren Ashley Simmons after supporting Republican bills on gender-transition care for minors. Thierry later switched to the Republican Party, saying Democrats had moved too far left. As reported by Politico, Florida Senate Minority Leader Jason Pizzo resigned from the Democratic Party and registered as unaffiliated due to internal conflicts and lack of direction within the state party. Pizzo faced criticism from party members for not fully aligning with the base.

Gallup found that the share of Democrats identifying as politically liberal rose from an average of 32% between 2001 and 2006 to 59% in 2025. The trend signals increasing ideological uniformity within the party nationally.
