Brian Kasal, president of the Northside Chicago Republicans, said Gov. JB Pritzker’s involvement in the Senate primary reflects his political ambitions and is fueling a divisive race that exposes fractures within Democratic leadership. Kasal shared that statement with Chicago City Wire.
The topic has drawn attention as spending and internal divisions increase within the Democratic Party. The Wall Street Journal reported that Gov. JB Pritzker has spent millions supporting his lieutenant governor, Juliana Stratton, in the Senate primary. The Congressional Black Caucus backs Robin Kelly, and another major contender, Raja Krishnamoorthi, leads in fundraising. With the winner likely to succeed retiring Sen. Dick Durbin, the race has drawn attention for its spending and internal divisions within the Democratic Party.
Kasal said, “Governor Pritzker’s heavy involvement in this Senate primary makes clear that his focus is less on strengthening Illinois Democrats and more on advancing his own political ambitions. By pouring resources into a preferred candidate, he has fueled a divisive contest that is exposing deep fractures within his party’s leadership. Illinois voters deserve leaders who prioritize unity and the needs of our communities, not personal political calculations. This race should be a wake-up call that leaders must refocus on transparency, collaboration, and putting the people of Illinois first,” according to Chicago City Wire.
Kasal is a resident of Chicago’s 43rd Ward and was first appointed to the role of President of Chicago’s Northside Republican Club in 2021. According to the organization’s website, Kasal is “focused on boosting Republican voter turnout, growing the Party’s membership, and communicating the Party’s positions on issues that matter to Chicago Northside voters.”
The outcome of this Senate primary will determine who succeeds retiring Sen. Dick Durbin as interest continues around campaign spending and party unity.
