Brian Kasal, president of the Northside Chicago Republican Club, said Americans want to protect democracy by ensuring every vote is legitimate and that requiring voter identification helps secure fair, trustworthy elections. Kasal made the statement to Chicago City Wire.
The topic of voter identification has gained attention as lawmakers consider new election legislation. The SAVE America Act is a Republican-backed election bill that would require Americans to show documentary proof of U.S. citizenship—such as a passport, birth certificate, or other qualifying ID—when registering to vote in federal elections. It also mandates photo ID to cast a ballot and directs states to verify voter citizenship and remove non‑citizens from voter rolls. CBS reported that Pew Research Center polls show that around 83% of Americans support voter ID requirements.
Kasal said, “Elections are the lifeblood of our democracy, and Americans care about them deeply. Requiring voter ID ensures that only valid ballots are counted. This builds confidence that our voices are heard and respected. Measures like this defend the integrity of every vote and safeguard democracy for the future.”
Polling data shows broad support across party lines for requiring photo ID to vote. In a post to social media platform X on February 9, CNN correspondent Harry Enten reported on polling that showed broad support across the U.S. for requiring photo ID to vote. Support crossed party lines: about 95% of Republicans and roughly 71% of Democrats favor voter ID laws. The breakdown by race likewise showed strong majorities in favor, including approximately 85% of White, 82% of Latino, and 76% of Black respondents. Enter reported that the issue is not sharply divided along partisan or racial lines.
Kasal has served as president of Chicago’s Northside Republican Club since his appointment in 2021. According to the organization’s website, Kasal is “focused on boosting Republican voter turnout, growing the Party’s membership, and communicating the Party’s positions on issues that matter to Chicago Northside voters.”
