A vote for one of the Democratic gubernatorial candidates next year is a tacit way of supporting the record-setting 32 percent income tax hike in Illinois, the Illinois Republican Party suggested recently.

"J.B. Pritzker supported the (Michael) Madigan tax before it was fashionable for Democrats," the group said in a press release. "Back in April, the News-Gazette noted that Pritzker 'recently told a group of party members that the state income tax should be increased to at least 5 percent, perhaps higher. Then, Pritzker released a statement praising the Madigan 32 percent tax hike budget after it became law."

The GOP also accused Chris Kennedy of saying the state "needed" the tax increase, Ameya Pawar of arguing that the hike would somehow 'protect' middle-class families, and Sen. Daniel Biss (D-Evanston) of voting for the increase.

Gov. Bruce Rauner vetoed the tax hike, but the General Assembly voted to override the veto and impose the hike, which increases the personal income tax in Illinois from 3.75 percent to 4.95 percent.
