Music

City Rock issued the following announcement on June 8.

Learn about how music therapy can stimulate the brain and strengthen mental connection with a free presentation by Music Speaks at 9:30 am on Wednesday, June 13 at the Rock Island Downtown Library, 401 19th Street.

Laura Fehr, senior therapist, board certified music therapist and credentialed developmental therapist with Music Speaks, LLC, will present details about what music therapy is, who can benefit from it, and how music therapy affects the brain to address non-musical and functional goals. She'll discuss how music therapists use small musical instruments, such as lap drums, to work toward improving communication, cognition, physical skills, and social-emotional skills.

Fehr attended the University of North Dakota and graduated with a Bachelor's of Music in Music Therapy and a minor in psychology in 2010, following which she completed her internship at West Music in Marion, IA. She specializes in working with young children, children with Autism Spectrum Disorder, older adults and hospice patients, including dementia and Alzheimer's disease. She is a member of America Music Therapy Association (AMTA), Iowa Chapter of Music Therapy (ICMT) and Illinois Association for Music Therapy (IAMT).

The program is free and open to the public. No registration is necessary. It's offered as part of summer programming for lifelong learning. Libraries Rock brings you summer reading challenges, learning fun, and free events for all ages at Rock Island Libraries from June 1 to July 21.
