More than 30 runners participated as part of Team Shriners in the Bank of America Chicago Marathon, raising funds to support pediatric specialty care at Shriners Children’s. The team included former patients, members of Shriners International, and supporters running on behalf of families affected by the hospital’s services.

One runner, Conor from Chicago, decided to run his first marathon for charity and chose Shriners Children’s Chicago after learning about the organization from his girlfriend Mary, a former patient. Mary said, “I had a wonderful experience at Shriners Children’s. Dr. Smith and his team were incredibly supportive during my scoliosis surgery. My care at Shriners Children’s was a huge part of my childhood and gave me strength that I still carry.” She also added, “I always hoped I’d be able to give back someday. Seeing him do this is incredibly special.”

Conor noted the personal significance of supporting the hospital: “Mary’s story and the mission of Shriners Children’s are so inspiring. It means a lot to run for a hospital that has helped so many kids and had such a positive impact on someone I love.” He shared that he was born with a cleft lip and palate, which is one of the conditions treated at the Chicago facility.

Team members came together with different backgrounds but united in their goal to honor the work done by Shriners Children’s and help future patients. The 2026 team has already been selected and is preparing for next year’s marathon with the aim of continuing support for children needing specialized medical care.
