Cure Violence, a nonprofit focused on violence prevention, will be honoring Gigi Pritzker Pucker, husband Michael Pucker and the Pritzker Pucker Family Foundation with the Civil Achievement Award on May 22 for their continued work to reduce violence, locally, nationally and globally.

“Gigi Pritzker Pucker and Michael Pucker are leaders advocating for new approaches to reducing violence through their foundation, the Pritzker Pucker Family Foundation," Dr. Gary Slutkin, founder of Cure Violence and a former member of the World Health Organization, said in a release. "Inspired by Gigi’s mother, Cindy Pritzker, the foundation’s work to promote violence reduction strategies is bearing fruit and improving the health and safety of our neighborhoods... . Cure Violence is proud to honor Gigi and Michael on behalf of the men, women, and children in Chicago’s communities.”

Cure violence was founded on the belief that violence spreads from person to person as individuals interpret and embed the behaviors they observe and experience within their community.

The organization has reduced violent crime in 25 U.S. cities and 10 countries around the world. Cure Violence is in 13 Chicago communities and operates in four major hospital trauma centers.

"The Pritzkers support crucial preventative violence measures in Chicago and around the country," Andy Gowdy, a spokesperson for Cure Violence, said. "They share Cure Violence’s public health approach that aims to stop the spread of violence in communities by detecting and interrupting conflicts, identifying and treating the highest-risk individuals, and in changing social norms."

Using a public health approach to stop the spread of violence in communities has helped take Cure Violence to No. 10 among the world's top 500 NGOs, as rated by NGO Advisor.
