Cost of college went up for all students at Northeastern Illinois University

In-state tuition and fees rose 5.9 percent for 2017-18 at Northeastern Illinois University, according to the latest disclosure from the U.S. Department of Education.

Illinois residents paid $10,736 to attend the four-year public institution this year $598 more than the $10,138 charged for 2016-17.

Non-residents paid 84.4 percent more than residents this year, or $19,792. Their price tag grew 6.9 percent from $18,514 in 2016-17.

About 98 percent of the school's undergraduate population are Illinois residents. And about 1 percent are residents of other states.

Data shows 72 percent of full-time undergraduates who started school in 2015-16 received student financial aid in some form. In all, 433 students received grants or scholarships totaling $3.33 million and 118 students took out student loans totaling more than $586,623.

Including all undergraduates, 4,307 students used grants or scholarships totaling $24.11 million. Another 2,416 took out $16.42 million in federal student loans.
