Amandla Charter School students suspended, expelled 319 times in a single school year

Amandla Charter School reported four expulsions and 315 suspensions for 2016-17, according to the latest student discipline report by the Illinois State Board of Education.

According to the report, the district expelled or suspended 319 students during the year. That equates to 115.2 percent of the 277 students enrolled.

Students were expelled for two incidents with violence without physical injury and two incidents with unspecified reasons.

The district reported that most in-school suspensions were given for violence without physical injury. The category includes one incidents. For one incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.

Of the 314 out-of-school suspensions, 212 were given to boys and 102 were given to girls, including 98 elementary or middle schoolers and 216 high schoolers.

The district reported that most out-of-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 181 incidents. There were 115 incidents of violence without physical injury. For 176 incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.
