Former state university employee Caref paid in $30K to pension fund, could collect $328K in retirement

Former state university employee Anita Caref, who retired in April 2019, saved $29,762 toward a pension over 5 years working for state universities, State Universities Retirement System of Illinois records show.

Over 30 years of retirement, Caref would collect as much as $327,699, according to a projection by Local Government Information Services (LGIS), which publishes Chicago City Wire.

The projection assumes Caref received $6,888 in the first year of retirement, then 3 percent annual increases thereafter, compounded.

After 5 years of retirement, Caref will have already received $36,571 in retirement benefits, or more than the sum total of the retiree's contributions to the state pension fund.
