Former teacher Gloria Whitmore, who retired in July 2018, saved $162,026 toward a pension over 40 years working for public schools, Chicago Teachers' Pension Fund records show.

Over 30 years of retirement, Whitmore would collect as much as $3.41 million, according to a projection by Local Government Information Services (LGIS), which publishes Chicago City Wire.

The projection assumes Whitmore received $71,693 in the first year of retirement, then 3 percent annual increases thereafter, compounded.

After 3 years of retirement, Whitmore will have already received $221,596 in retirement benefits, or more than the sum total of the retiree's contributions to the teachers' pension fund.
