Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot announced March 18 actions that will temporarily provide financial relief during the COVID-19 pandemic for residents who are cited for nonsafety violations.

The temporary suspension of debt collection, ticketing and towing is being done to provide people relief because of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the Mayor’s Press Office.

The measures are effective through April 30.

Debt collection practices, nonsafety-related citations and impounds and penalties for late payment will be temporarily suspended, the press office said.

“We realize that many of our residents are strapped for cash right now as the effort to contain the spread of the coronavirus has created difficult economic circumstances for those who are unable to work,” Lightfoot said in the press announcement.

“We don’t want to further impact people who can’t afford to pay these penalties today and want to provide some breathing room to help them prioritize how to address their financial obligations.”
