Chicago mayor's allocation of CARES Act funding excludes additional spending for police department

The Chicago City Council approved the outline of how it will spend the $1.13 billion allotted to it through the CARES Act.

The plan, written by Mayor Lori Lightfoot, includes a $333 million discretionary fund. A group of alderman wrote a letter to Lightfoot asking that the funds not be used to fund the police department, and Lightfoot said none would be used for that purpose.

Alderman Carlos Ramirez-Rosa (35th District) is among those who voted against the bill.

“We cannot say Black lives matter, we cannot say Black trans lives matter, and at the same time continue to take money that should go toward critical social services, that should go toward increasing our assistance for renters, and instead spending that money on police,” he said, according to Chicago CBS Local.
