Chicago City Wire

About 21.7 percent of the 13,038 degrees and certificates handed out by the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2017-18 were to students in engineering programs, making them the most popular programs that year, according to the latest disclosure from the U.S. Department of Education.

The agency's National Center for Education Statistics shows the public institution in Champaign conferred 1814 bachelor's degrees and 796 master's degrees in engineering programs.

But the single most popular program was for a bachelor's degree in research and other experimental psychology. Data shows the school gave out 422 bachelor's degrees in research and other experimental psychology, followed by 404 bachelor's degrees in accounting and 368 bachelor's degrees in general economics.

The university enrolled 49,702 students for 2017-18, including 33,915 in undergraduate programs and 15,787 in graduate programs.
