Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx is facing growing criticism following the shooting death of a retired Evergreen Park special education teacher on Illinois' Dan Ryan Expressway, amid reports that the two men being detained were only recently released after being implicated in another shooting.
Denise M. Huguelet, 67, was leaving a Chicago White Sox game and riding with her husband and another relative when she was struck by crossfire earlier this month in the southbound lanes near 63rd Street, according to WBBM News Radio, citing reports from Illinois State Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
“Reliable source tells me the 2 men detained in the killing of the retired Orland Park special education teacher a couple weeks ago were released because Kim Foxx’s office said the suspects were shooting at others shooting at them so it was self-defense and accidental," Chicago Morning Answer radio host Dan Proft posted on Twitter. "More details required.”
The Chicago Sun-Times adds Huguelet was struck in the back by crossfire coming from two other vehicles around 10 p.m. Huguelet, who resided in Orland Park and was the grandmother of 11, was a special education teacher for 24 years at Central Middle School.
“Her passion for students and her dedication to the community showed in all aspects of her work,” school officials said in a statement, according to FOX6 News. “Mrs. Huguelet’s nature with kids was kind, yet firm, to ensure that students were taught the independent skills they needed to be successful in their futures. She cared deeply about the academic needs of students and the social and emotional well-being of every student’s needs."
The number of shootings on Chicago-area expressways so far this year stands at 156, outpacing the 128 shootings that were seen all of last year, according to The Chicago Sun-Times. On the Dan Ryan, there have already been 50 shootings, the most of any Chicago-area expressway.
Wirepoints President Ted Dabrowski laments that the rise in violence isn’t limited to just Chicago expressways and is already starting to bring about a change in the downtown area.
“When you start combining this crime issue that we're talking about and start adding that corporations are going to delay their office reopenings, it starts to all add up again," Dabrowski told Chicago Morning Answer.
Dabrowski added that Foxx’s office is mishandling the entire situation, especially the increase in crime.
“I think it’s a real issue,” he said. “I hear people say we don’t go down there anymore. People don’t walk around there anymore. They take an Uber everywhere they’re going. It’s really confusing when you hear (authorities) say how much better they’re doing managing felonies when this new report comes out and says just the opposite.”
