Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot recently received thanked Alderman Walter Brunett for his official endorsement in her bid for reelection.

The mayor shared the Alderman's endorsement in a July 6 Twitter post.

"As an alderman who grew up in Cabrini-Green, I know how important it is that every Chicagoan has access to safe, high-quality spaces that they can call home," Brunett said. "Mayor Lightfoot shares that vision. The mayor is leading the largest investment in affordable housing in Chicago's history. I am excited to stand with the mayor as she announces her bid for another term and ask my constituents and residents across the city to join me."

"Thank you, @AldermanBurnett, for standing with me as I run for another term as mayor. With your support, together, we can continue the work to make a difference in this great city," Lightfoot wrote in response.

The incumbent mayor announced her bid for reelection on June 7.

"The success and future of this city is personal to me. And I’ll never stop fighting to make Chicago fairer and more equitable for all. That’s why I am running for reelection," Lightfoot wrote.

Lightfoot's bid for reelection comes at a time when the city faces surging levels of violent crime. Compared to 2019, murders have increased by 28%, robberies have increased by 8%, thefts have increased by 28%, and motor vehicle thefts have increased by 46%.

Lightfoot was elected in 2019 after incumbent Rahm Emmanuel announced he would not seek another term, according to Ballotpedia. The upcoming general mayoral election is scheduled for Feb. 28, 2023.
