Three Liberal cities in America are cited as the ones lagging the most in economic activity during the post-Covid rebound.

“Liberals are good at rebelling but not so much at governing,” the Hipster Spock Twitter account responds to a report naming San Francisco, Cleveland, and Portland as the three cities with the lowest bounce back in post-Covid activity.

Chicago, Illinois, was not spared by the survey, which placed the city fifth lowest. Chicago's downtown has fared one of the worst in the post-Covid recovery, with only 41% of its businesses returning. San Francisco, Cleveland, Portland, and Detroit were the only cities that performed poorer.

The Institute of Governmental Studies at the University of California Berkeley commissioned the study, which used data from 18 million smartphone users going through America's busiest metro cities to discover which downtown areas bounced back the most and least, according to ZeroHedge.

Crime has surged in Chicago and the surrounding areas under the leadership of Cook County State's Attorney Kim Foxx. Crime in Chicago continues to rise, with surges in burglaries, thefts, and stolen vehicles. Murder rates have skyrocketed in recent years, reaching record highs not seen since 1994. Auto thefts increased by 45%, thefts increased by 61%, and burglaries increased by 33% in 2022 alone, Chicago Sun-Times reported.

Overall, violent crime increased by 4% over the previous year, which represented one of the most violent years in recent decades. The figures are even grimmer when compared to 2019, just before the pandemic and the continuous rise in violence that has happened since then.

This year, at least 386 individuals have been shot in Chicago, compared to 236 at this time last year. There have been 92 murders this year, compared to 47 at this time the year before. Altogether, the incidence of violent crime has increased by about 8% since this time last year.

Salt Lake City, Utah, Bakersfield, California, and Columbus, Ohio had the most significant increases in downtown activity following the pandemic.
