David Brown, Superintendent of the Chicago Police Department (CPD), thanked those involved in apprehending a teenager who is being charged with murdering a man in August on a CTA train.
"A 16-year-old has been arrested in Georgia and brought back to face justice in Chicago for the senseless murder of a 29-year-old male in August 2022 on a @cta train," Brown wrote on Twitter. "The juvenile will appear in court today, where he faces First Degree Murder charges. Officers from the @USMarshalsHQ Great Lakes Fugitive Task Force arrested the juvenile in Georgia last month after he was identified as the offender who shot and killed the victim in August. The offender was extradited to Chicago on December 6, 2022. Thank you to all who worked diligently to bring justice to this victim and his family."
ABC 7 reported that victim Diunte Moon was a security guard and was in his final year of college to get a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice.
CPD announced in a news release that a 16-year-old male who had been identified as one of the individuals involved in shooting and killing Moon on a Red Line train in August has been arrested. The juvenile was located in Georgia and brought back to Chicago, where he was charged accordingly.
According to Gun Policy.org, Illinois prohibits anyone under 18 to own a handgun.
ABC7 Chicago reported the victim's family said Moon was on his way home from work, but they believe he had fallen asleep on the Red Line train and so had to turn around when he reached 95th Street. He was shot in the chest and abdomen around 2 am on Aug. 6 and was pronounced dead at University of Chicago Medical Center. Moon's mother, Kina Moon, said, "Diunte was a fighter. He knew what he wanted. He was in his last year in college. I have four boys and now I have to set up and raise his girl. Be there like he was. He was an awesome dad."
In response to Moon's death, Superintendent David Brown announced that CPD would move more officers onto the CTA, ABC7 reported. Hours after the announcement, a 17-year-old was critically wounded during a gun fight that took place outside of the 79th Street Red Line station. James Moon, an uncle of Diunte Moon, said, "After my nephew got killed at the same place on 79th Street, another young boy gets shot! When is it going to stop?"
