CHICAGO – On Saturday, December 10, 2022, at approximately 7:33 p.m. 5th District (Calumet) officers responded to a disturbance in the 9900 block of S. Wentworth. A male offender gained entry into a nearby residence and was threatening a female resident with a knife. Officers confronted the offender and repeatedly ordered him to drop the knife. The officers pulled the woman to safety and continued their verbal direction with the offender refusing to comply. One officer deployed their taser, which was ineffective. The offender then lunged at an officer, striking him to the shoulder and head with a knife. An officer then discharged his weapon, striking the offender. The offender was transported to an area hospital in critical condition. The officers were transported to an area hospital for treatment where one officer is in serious but stable condition and the other officer is there for observation. There were no other injuries reported.
Currently, the specifics of this incident, including the comprehensive use of force investigation, are being investigated by the Civilian Office of Police Accountability with the full cooperation of the Chicago Police Department. The Officer(s) involved will be placed on routine administrative duties for a period of 30 days.
