About the Crime:

This alert gives notice to citizens in the 003rd District (Grand Crossing) of reported Motor Vehicle Thefts/Attempt Motor Vehicle Thefts during the month of January. In these incidents, the victim legally parked their vehicle on the street and returned to find their vehicle missing. In three of the incidents, the victim returned to their vehicle to find a window broken and that the steering column had been peeled in an attempt to take the vehicle. These Motor Vehicle Thefts/Attempt Motor Vehicle Thefts have occurred in the geographical locations listed below:

Incident locations and times:

  • 6300 Block of South St Lawrence Ave, on January 11, 2023, at 05:00 PM.
  • 6400 Block of South Maryland Ave, on January 13, 2023, at 09:00 PM.
  • 6500 Block of South Eberhart Ave, on January 14, 2023, between 10:00 AM.-09:08 PM.
  • 6400 Block of South Maryland Ave, on January 15-16, 2023, between 07:30 PM.- 10:30 AM.
  • 6400 Block of South Cottage Grove Ave, on January 20, 2023, between 06:00 PM.- 11:00 PM.
  • 400 Block of East 65th St, on January 21, 2023, at 07:00 AM.
  • 6400 Block of South Maryland Ave, on January 29, 2023, at 06:45 AM.
What you can do:

  • Do not leave your keys in your vehicle or your vehicle running unattended.
  •  Immediately report suspicious activity.
  •  Keep your vehicle doors and windows secured.
  •  Be aware of these crimes and alert your neighbors.
  •  Pay special attention to any suspicious people loitering in the area.
  •  Immediately call -911 and provide a detailed description of the offender(s) including any vehicle description and license plate information.
  •  Kia and Hyundai owners can obtain anti-theft steering wheel locks from their local CAPS office.
  •  At all 22 police districts, residents can have a special, traceable marking etched into their vehicle's catalytic converter.
  •  Residents can be reimbursed for the cost of their GPS tracking device by registering with the City.
