About the Crime:

This alert gives notice to citizens in the 009th District (Deering) of reported Motor Vehicle Thefts/Attempt Motor Vehicle Thefts during the month of February. In these incidents, the victim legally parked their vehicle on the street and returned to find their vehicle missing. In some of the incidents, the victim returned to their vehicle to find a window broken and that the steering column had been peeled in an attempt to take the vehicle. These Motor Vehicle Thefts/Attempt Motor Vehicle Thefts have occurred in the geographical locations listed below:

Incident locations and times:

  • 3100 Block of South Aberdeen on February 2, 2023 between 2:00PM-4:40PM.
  •  2200 Block of West 37th Street on February 3-4, 2023 between 7:00PM and 9:00AM.
  •  3200 Block of South May Street on February 5-7, 2023 between 6:00PM and 2:00PM.
  •  500 Block of West 38th Street on February 5, 2023 at 5:10PM.
  •  5300 Block of South Rockwell on February 6-7, 2023 between 5:20PM and 8:00AM.
  •  3400 Block of South Archer Avenue on February 11, 2023 at 3:45PM.
  •  1800 Block of West 34th Street on February 11-12, 2023 between 5:30PM and 9:00AM.
  •  2800 Block of South Hillock on February 11-12, 2023 between 7:30PM and 9:00AM.
What you can do:

  • Do not leave your keys in your vehicle or your vehicle running unattended.
  •  Immediately report suspicious activity.
  •  Keep your vehicle doors and windows secured.
  •  Be aware of these crimes and alert your neighbors.
  •  Pay special attention to any suspicious people loitering in the area.
  •  Immediately call -911 and provide a detailed description of the offender(s) including any vehicle description and license plate information.
  •  Kia and Hyundai owners can obtain anti-theft steering wheel locks from their local CAPS office.
  •  At all 22 police districts, residents can have a special, traceable marking etched into their vehicle's catalytic converter.
  •  Residents can be reimbursed for the cost of their GPS tracking device by registering with the City.
