About the Crime:

This alert gives notice to residents in the 001st District of recent Motor Vehicle Theft and Criminal Damage to Vehicle incidents which have occurred in recent months at multiple parking garages located along Wells St on Beat 123. In each of these incidents, the offender(s) are targeting unattended vehicles located in a parking structure. In a vast majority of occurrences, the offender(s) are entering locked vehicles by breaking the driver or passenger side windows with an unknown object before entering and taking possession of vehicle or property located inside of the vehicle.

•  500 block of South Wells Street on December 25, 2022 at 5:00 pm.
•  800 block of South Wells Street on January 15, 2023 at 4:30 pm.
•  800 block of South Wells Street on January 15, 2023 at 6:30 pm.
•  800 block of South Wells Street on January 17, 2023 at 1:00 am.
•  800 block of South Wells Street on January 17, 2023 at 4:00 pm.
•  800 block of South Wells Street on January 18, 2023 at 7:00 am.
•  800 block of South Wells Street on January 18, 2023 at 8:30 am.
•  900 block of South Wells Street on January 18, 2023 at 9:28 am.
•  900 block of South Wells Street on January 18, 2023 at 9:29 am.
•  800 block of South Wells Street on January 18, 2023 at 3:00 pm.
•  900 block of South Wells Street on January 19, 2023 at 8:40 am.
•  500 block of South Wells Street on January 20, 2023 at 8:00 pm.
•  600 block of South Wells Street on January 20, 2023 at 10:30 pm.
•  800 block of South Wells Street on January 27, 2023 at 4:00 pm.
•  800 block of South Wells Street on January 29, 2023 at 8:00 am.
•  800 block of South Wells Street on January 30, 2023 at 6:00 pm.
•  500 block of South Wells Street on February 8, 2023 at 6:20 pm.
•  500 block of South Wells Street on February 19, 2023 at 12:15 am.

What you can do:

•  Park in well-lit areas away from larger vehicles that may offer privacy for a thief to steal your car.
•  Do not leave your vehicle unlocked.
•  Install a security/anti-theft system and advertise it on vehicle.
•  Be aware of your surroundings, especially when securing your vehicle.
•  Pay special attention to suspicious individuals in the area and alert the police.
•  Ensure family/friends/neighbors check on your parked vehicle periodically if gone for extended periodsof time.
•  Call 911 immediately if you are a victim or witness to a crime and provide a detailed description of the offender(s) including any physical/clothing identifiers in addition to any vehicle description and license plate information.
•  Make sure you have a copy your license plate and vehicle identification (VIN) numbers. If your vehicle is stolen, police will need this information promptly.
