Hundreds gathered in long lines to pay respects to fallen Chicago Police officer Andrés Mauricio Vásquez Lasso at the Blake-Lamb Funeral Home in Oak Lawn on March 8.
“He had a lot ahead for him,” said Ald. Silvana Tabares, whose 23rd Ward includes the section of Marquette Park where Vásquez Lasso lived with his wife and daughter.
CBS Chicago reported Vásquez-Lasso had a visitation from 3 to 8 p.m. on March 8 at Blake-Lamb Funeral home at 4727 West 103rd St. in Oak Lawn. His funeral Mass was at 10 a.m. on March 9 at St. Rita of Cascia Shrine Chapel at 7740 South Western Ave., followed by a private burial. A vigil was held at 12:30 p.m. on March 11 in Mount Greenwood Park at 111th Street and Pulaski Road.
Gov. J.B. Pritzker, Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot and state Comptroller Susana Mendoza were among those paying respects to the officer shot and killed in a foot pursuit in Gage Park, where authorities have since charged 18-year-old Steven Montano with being the triggerman.
“It happened so fast,” Chicago Police Supt. David Brown said. “Other officers heard shots and at that point in time began to render aid and get help for this officer for a chance to survive.”
The two exchanged gunfire, with Montano hitting the officer in the head, arm and leg, authorities said, adding that he was rushed to Mount Sinai Hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. The officer fired twice and hit Montano in the face.
Vásquez-Lasso served with the Chicago Police Department for five years and is survived by his wife, mother and sister.
According to the Chicago Sun-Times, Montano has been ordered held without bail with his next court date set for March 22, for a status hearing, while.
