First Deputy Superintendent Eric M. Carter to serve as Interim Superintendent | CPD

CHICAGO — The Chicago Police Department (CPD) announced today that First Deputy Superintendent Eric M. Carter has been appointed Interim Superintendent by Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot following the resignation of outgoing Superintendent David O. Brown. "It is my privilege to serve as Interim Superintendent and lead the brave men and women of CPD," said Interim Superintendent Carter. "We will continue the progress we made under the leadership of Superintendent Brown to build trust in our communities and strengthen safety across every neighborhood."

As First Deputy Superintendent, Interim Superintendent Carter served as CPD's second-in-command since July 2020. During his time as First Deputy Superintendent, he oversaw all Department deployment operations which include the Bureaus of Patrol, Detectives, Counterterrorism and Special Operations.

As a 30-year member of the Department, Interim Superintendent Carter has served in many areas of CPD. He moved up through the command staff ranks, serving as Chief of the Bureau of Counterterrorism and Special Operations, Deputy Chief of the Special Functions Division, Deputy Chief of the Bureau of Organized Crime and Commander of both the 4th (South Chicago) District and 6th (Gresham) District. He also spent a majority of his career performing various patrol and investigative functions, including gang and narcotics investigations within the Bureau of Organized Crime. Additionally, he has served on both the FBI and DEA federal task forces. 

Interim Superintendent Carter attended the Police Executive Research Forum's Senior Management Institute for Police, the DEA Drug Unit Command School, and the 227th Session of the FBI National Academy. He is a veteran of the United States Marine Corps, and holds a master’s degree in public and nonprofit corporate management from Saint Xavier University.
