City of Wheaton Bicyclist and Pedestrian Commission met Feb. 15

Here are the minutes provided by the commission:

Members Present In Person: Connor, Cate, Rita, Bill, Michele, Alyse

Members Present on Zoom: Laurel, George, Bob, David

Public members present in person: Joe Amore

Public members present in Zoom: Brian and Joyce Ostberg

I. Call to Order 7:03 

II. Approval of January Minutes 

Motion to approve Michelle, Seconded Connor; approved unanimously by voice vote.

III. Public Comment 

A. Joe Amore is chair Bike Pedestrian and Transit subcommittee of Environmental Concerns Commission for the Village of Villa Park. They have been admiring our work and he came to learn a little more about what we do. We each walked through the projects we are working on and invited him to attend any of meetings or events.

IV. Chair Report 

A. Guests- Brian & Joyce from BeHistoric You Tube rides for our History Ride – we have asked them if they are interested in possibly hosting the history ride in Wheaton this year. Series on Great Western. Ideas for this year – they can do Sept 9th or 16th

i. Railroad Stations – some are north or south of Roosevelt

ii. Chicago Aurora Elgin sites of North Wheaton – College Avenue; Wheaton Station; Headquarters new and old, Dispatch Tower; along Carleton former railyard; Wesley Street station/bridge; Lincoln Street station; end at Mystery Bridge – 1 block south of Jewel Road; bridge that transects Lincoln Marsh – a few artifacts along the stretch; 8 or 9 sites, not a big distance – library to college to prairie path, down Carlton to volunteer bridge then a mile along Elgin; there’s room for attendees and bikes

iii. Prehistoric Discoveries – mastodon; unincorporated E Winfield; Kautz sites, bridge over w branch of DuPage River; known archeological site; glacial ridge; Churchill woods; Morraine

iv. All members should come next month with any other ideas we have and we should talk through our options.

B. Commissioner Brunch – Alyse, Michelle, Bob are attending.

C. Dan Nelson – resigned because he does not have time to attend meetings, but would like to participate in our events.

V. Ongoing Business 

A. 2023 History Ride – some options for this year below – everyone come to meeting with some ideas so we can decide by April what the plan is 

i. Wheaton Govt Rides

ii. Prohibition

iii. Golf

iv. Streets named after Famous Wheatonians

B. Safe Routes to School – Should we go to principals and PTAs and see who wants to get involved?

i. Cate, Connor, Bill and George and Rita will help get names of principals; will be a subcommittee to gather information

C. 2022 Virtual History Ride – 

i. Bill contacted Bob for notes – computer crashed – Michelle got Library notes and Michelle will reach out to Rich and the city who will add to our virtual ride; no rush

D. Safety Rodeo/Bike Valet 

i. Michelle is working with the Park District to see if we can do a rodeo at Cream of Wheaton – they will meet this week and let us know.

E. Google Form/Helmet raffle 

i. Michelle emailed link to the survey – read and edit by 3/1

ii. Alyse to edit for grammar

iii. 8x10 ad to take survey at Library, Train Stations, Spokes, Midwest Cycle, Prairie Path – 10 – Michele to create code

F. Sidewalks 

i. Nothing to really discuss at this point

G. New Logo 

i. Rita got a quote to update the logo from Alpha Graphics for $80 - we would get the Motion – David moved to commission alpha graphics to redo our logo for $150 or less, Michelle seconded, unanimous approval by voice vote

ii. Rita sent to John DuGuay – they have a letter head logo

VI. New Business 

A. Wheaton Traffic Reports 

i. Lots of these reports are available- let’s use them to our advantage – Bill will send link to people

B. Dates for 2023 – let’s get dates on calendar for Bike Valet/Rodeo, History Ride – come next month with commitment for the events

C. March 12th Walk – Michelle will email to people who do bike rides; George will write up and Alyse to send to Andrea

D. Prairie Path Clean Up -Saturday April 29th

E. Map of bike racks – advertise – Cate will write city newsletter and we will link to source data

F. Brian Joyce put together a video on the prairie path
