WASHINGTON, DC — On May 12, Congressman Jesús “Chuy'' García (IL-04), issued the following statement after the end of Title 42.

“Title 42 was a racist Trump policy designed to restrict asylum rights using public health as an excuse, part of a decades-long process of removing legal pathways to migration and militarizing our border. Even though the implementation of Title 42 was a mistake, its end presents its own set of challenges.

“Continuing to restrict asylum — as the Biden Administration is now doing — is not a workable solution.

“As we move forward, let us be clear eyed on why migrants arrive at our border and what our obligation to them is.

“Migrants make the journey out of desperation and fear. And they deserve to be met by an immigration system rooted in compassion and opportunity. That means investing in more immigration judges, expanding access to legal representation, and improving processing capacity.

“It also means doing all we can to stand up to leaders like Governor Abbott who send migrants across the country to cities like Chicago for political gain.

“And we need a hemispheric foreign policy that complements our interest in addressing the conditions — many of our own making — that force people to leave their countries of origin in the first place.

“We are a nation of immigrants, and it is our obligation to treat migrants at the border and in our communities with the compassion and care they deserve.
