Chicago, IL On May 28, 2023 Congresswoman Delia Ramirez (IL-03) released the following statement on the proposed debt limit deal, the bill text for which Democratic Congressmembers haven't yet received:

“I am still anxiously waiting to see the bill text that includes the reported debt limit deal President Biden and Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) reached. Based on what we know, and with very little time before an expected vote, I have serious concerns that reflect the concerns of my district. The inclusion of work requirements for SNAP and TANF is not going to make a transformative difference in our debt but will forever change the lives of many American families who are already struggling. If Republicans want work requirements so badly, let’s put work requirements on the wealthy who claim capital gains. The rescinding of essential COVID funds will have a tremendous impact on states like Illinois, and the possibility of permitting reform that favors the fossil fuel industry over clean air and clean drinking water in our communities will be a global disservice in the face of a climate crisis,” said Congresswoman Ramirez. “I look forward to receiving the full text of this proposed deal as soon as possible to study thoroughly, and ensure we vote on a deal that protects the working families of Illinois’ 3rd Congressional District and our nation."
