Washington, DC - Congresswoman Delia C. Ramirez (IL-03) released the following statement on the United States Supreme Court’s decision to strike down President Biden’s plan to forgive about $430 billion in student loan debt for low-income and middle-class student borrowers:

"On June 30, the Supreme Court Justices who take luxury gifts and favors from MAGA billionaires, once again, ruled against the American people, justice, and the well-being of our democracy. Education is a pillar of our democracy, and this decision reflects how desperate Republicans are to disempower our everyday people by making education unaffordable and unattainable. This decision to strike down student debt will punish the tens of millions of Americans - including the almost 1.15 million in Illinois’ Third Congressional District -  who dared to look for education and are now trying to get ahead in life. At a time when Americans are trying to pay their health care bills, their rent and put food on the table, the prospect of not canceling student debt means many will keep being crushed under the economic burden. But this decision doesn't have to be the end. On June 30, President Biden and Secretary Cardona can cancel all student debt, fully and outright, with no additional means-testing.

“Our Supreme Court shouldn’t be allowed to do the bidding of the 1%. They need to be accountable to the people. It is time to establish strong ethical accountability and to finally expand the court.”
