In a scathing critique of the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU), school choice activist Corey DeAngelis called the union a "total clown show" for its contradictory actions and failure to prioritize the needs of students. DeAngelis pointed out various instances where the CTU's actions seemed to contradict their statements.
One of the incidents DeAngelis highlighted was a CTU board member vacationing in Puerto Rico while claiming it was too dangerous to return to work in person. This blatant disregard for their own messaging raises questions about the union's commitment to the welfare of students and their education.
DeAngelis also mentioned the CTU deleting a tweet that stated, "the push to reopen schools is rooted in sexism, racism, and misogyny." This tweet not only misrepresented the intentions of those advocating for a return to in-person learning but also undermined the credibility of the CTU.
In an interview with Fox News, DeAngelis expressed his hope that the recent actions of the CTU would encourage more families to consider school choice options. He highlighted the fact that the president of the CTU, Stacy Davis Gates, had chosen to send her own child to a private school, highlighting the need for increased options for all families.
Davis Gates, who has been the president of the CTU since 2022, previously served as the union's Vice President and led a 2019 strike that lasted for 15 days. Before her involvement with the union, she taught high school social studies classes in various schools.
Overall, DeAngelis's criticism of the CTU highlights the need for a more student-centric approach and increased school choice options to ensure that every child has access to quality education. The actions and statements of the CTU raise concerns about their commitment to the wellbeing of students and their ability to effectively advocate for their needs.
