For the first time in more than a decade, enrollment did not decline at Chicago Public Schools, according to district officials.
After the 20th day of classes, CPS enrollment was 322,500. Last year, CPS enrollment topped at 322,106, which was a 9,000-student decline from the 2021-2022 school year. Over the last decade, CPS enrollment has declined by about 80,000 students.
"I’m pleased to share that preliminary student enrollment numbers across Chicago Public Schools shows that enrollment remains relatively consistent with last school year.," CPS CEO Pedro Martinez said.
"We will offer more analysis and context to our enrollment figures later this month but it appears the District is continuing the trend of seeing more English Learners, more Diverse Learners, and more Students in Temporary Living Situations. We are pleased to note that this is the first time in a decade that District enrollment has remained stable, and we are honored and privileged to serve each and every student.”
CPS officials said that the steady enrollment is due to a "combination of factors and not to one group of students." Over the next several weeks, CPS staff is set to analyze enrollment data to determine where the number of students either increased or declined.
