State Representative Brad Stephens, alongside his fellow House Republicans, including Representatives Jeff Keicher, Nicole La Ha, and Jennifer Sanalitro, has taken a strong stand against human trafficking by introducing a comprehensive package of legislation aimed at combating this heinous crime and supporting its victims.

Among the bills proposed, House Bill 5466, introduced by Rep. La Ha, removes the defense of mistaken age for the offense of patronizing a minor engaged in prostitution. Additionally, House Bill 5467 eliminates the statute of limitations for certain human trafficking-related offenses involving minors, while House Bill 5134 requires convicted individuals to register as sex offenders.

Furthermore, Rep. Sanalitro's bill, House Bill 5468, creates a defense for victims of human trafficking who commit crimes as a result of being trafficked, ensuring their protection under the law. Another bill from Rep. Sanalitro, House Bill 5469, establishes the Human Trafficking Order of Protection Act, allowing victims to obtain protection orders against their traffickers. Rep. Stephens also contributed to the fight against human trafficking by introducing House Bill 5470, which holds buyers accountable as sex trafficking offenders.

In a separate development, Rep. Stephens voiced his support for the Chicago Elected School Board legislation, emphasizing the importance of empowering local communities in decision-making processes. He expressed optimism about the progress made, stating, “This begins the process to eventually achieving just that,” in reference to a fully elected school board.

Looking ahead, Rep. Stephens outlined his commitment to addressing various issues related to the legislation, such as campaign finance restrictions and redistricting processes. He affirmed, “I will also work on any other issues that may arise during this process,” highlighting his dedication to ensuring effective governance in the education sector.

The recent Emerging Women Leaders Event in Springfield was also celebrated, where outstanding female leaders like Melissa Bukovatz and Joan Buccini were honored for their contributions to society.
