The Cook County Department of Public Health (CCDPH) has confirmed the first suburban Cook County measles case this year, with the individual having been exposed during their time in a shelter for new arrivals in Chicago. The resident has since recovered and is no longer contagious.

CCDPH is actively working to identify and notify individuals who may have been exposed to the recent suburban Cook County case. Vaccinations and testing for immunity will be provided to those who are unsure of their immune status. According to CCDPH Chief Operating Officer Dr. LaMar Hasbrouck, "People who have not been vaccinated or previously infected are at risk of getting measles."

Measles is a highly contagious respiratory disease that can have serious consequences, especially for vulnerable populations. Dr. Hasbrouck emphasized the importance of vaccinations, stating that "Fewer people have chosen to get the measles vaccine in recent years, resulting in an increase in cases in 2023 and 2024."

The increase in measles cases is not limited to Cook County, as there has been a rise in cases nationally and globally. Dr. Hasbrouck highlighted the infectious nature of measles and the effectiveness of the vaccine in preventing its spread, with two doses shown to be 97 percent effective. As of March 21, 2024, a total of 64 measles cases were reported in various jurisdictions, including Illinois.

Individuals who suspect exposure to measles are advised to consult their healthcare provider for evaluation and testing if symptoms develop. It is recommended to call ahead before seeking medical attention to prevent potential exposure to others. Residents can also check their immunization records via the IDPH Vax Verify portal.

For those traveling internationally, especially children over 6 months of age, healthcare providers should be consulted regarding additional doses of the MMR vaccine. To schedule a measles vaccination appointment in Cook County, individuals can contact Cook County Health community health centers at 833-308-1988.

In light of the recent case in suburban Cook County and the ongoing measles outbreaks, CCDPH urges all residents to ensure they are up to date with their vaccinations to protect themselves and their communities against this preventable disease.
