A Rockford man has been sentenced to eight years in federal prison for illegal firearm possession. Tyrone Smith, 37, admitted guilt earlier this year to the charge. As a felon, Smith was barred by federal law from possessing firearms. He confessed that in September 2022, while in Rockford, he had a handgun loaded with 13 rounds of ammunition.

U.S. District Judge Lindsay C. Jenkins delivered the sentence at the U.S. District Court in Rockford on Monday.

The sentencing announcement came from Morris Pasqual, Acting United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois; Christopher Amon, Special Agent-in-Charge of the Chicago Field Division of the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives; and Carla Redd, Chief of the Rockford Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Theodora Anderson represented the government.

This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a strategy by the Department of Justice aimed at reducing violent crime through federal prosecution of illegal firearm possessors. In Illinois' Northern District, authorities have utilized PSN to address various violent crime issues, focusing especially on firearm offenses.
