A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was submitted to the City of Chicago on October 28, 2024, regarding unpaid parking violations. The request was made by us at the Chicago City Wire, a media organization dedicated to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs.

In our quest for transparency and accountability, we requested records under the Illinois Freedom of Information Act, 5 ILCS 140. Specifically, we asked for a list of all parking violations currently unpaid in the city. This list should include the name of the offender, their address, the amount due for each violation, the date when each violation occurred, and the total amount due.

As a media organization engaged in gathering and reporting news to the public, access to such public records is essential for us to fulfill our professional responsibilities. These responsibilities include holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public.

We believe that as media professionals involved in disseminating information to the public, we are eligible for a fee waiver. We eagerly await a response from the City of Chicago and remain committed to bringing accurate and timely information about local government affairs to our readers.
