The City of Chicago is urging residents and visitors to prioritize safety during the holiday season. The Office of Emergency Management and Communications (OEMC) has emphasized vigilance, especially in crowded areas, advising people to be aware of evacuation points at events and report any suspicious activity by calling 9-1-1. OEMC will oversee citywide activities, traffic, and weather conditions throughout the holidays, coordinating with the Chicago Police Department, Chicago Fire Department, and other city infrastructure departments.

OEMC highlights the importance of reporting suspicious activity through the "If You See Something, Say Something" campaign. This national anti-terrorism initiative encourages public awareness about potential threats posed by individuals or small groups motivated by various ideological beliefs or personal grievances.

The Chicago Fire Department advises against using space heaters but recommends ensuring they are UL certified if used. They should be kept at least three feet away from anything flammable. Extension cords should have a minimum rating of 15 amps and not be placed under carpets. Residents must have working carbon monoxide detectors as required by ordinance due to increased furnace use during colder months. For assistance with heating issues or access to warming centers, residents can contact 3-1-1.

The Business Affairs and Consumer Protection (BACP) department offers tips for protecting consumers from fraud during holiday shopping through its "Be Informed. Be Protected" campaign. More information is available at Chicago.gov/BACP.

As temperatures drop, the Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) advises residents to take precautions against winter health risks such as frostbite and hypothermia. Residents are encouraged to limit outdoor time, wear warm clothing layers, monitor heart strain during physical activities like snow shoveling, and get updated COVID-19 and flu vaccines.

The Chicago Department of Aviation (CDA) is preparing for an influx of travelers at O’Hare and Midway International Airports over the holiday week. Safety remains a top priority for both travelers and employees.

Traffic Control Aides will manage traffic flow at citywide events during this busy period. Public transportation is recommended for ease of travel; details on services can be found at TransitChicago.com or by calling 312-836-7000.

For comprehensive safety information including emergency alerts and weather updates, residents are encouraged to download the Chicago OEMC App available on Apple App Store and Google Play Store or visit Chicago.gov/OEMC.

Residents are advised to stay informed about weather conditions via local media or apps like the OEMC App. Alerts will be issued as necessary through NotifyChicago.org for real-time updates on emergencies affecting businesses or lakefront areas.

Further emergency preparedness information can be accessed on the OEMC website at Chicago.gov/OEMC or via their social media platforms: Facebook (@coemc), Twitter (@ChicagoOEMC), and Instagram (chicago_oemc_911).
