The Chicago Department of Aviation (CDA) is preparing to accommodate approximately 3.66 million passengers at O'Hare and Midway International Airports during the holiday season from December 20 to January 2. This estimate comes from airline projections.
Mayor Brandon Johnson stated, "As the holiday spirit fills Chicago, O'Hare and Midway are gearing up to connect families, friends, and travelers." He emphasized the dedication of airport staff in ensuring seamless travel experiences.
O'Hare is expected to see its busiest day on December 23 with nearly 243,000 passengers. Over the two-week period, the airport anticipates welcoming about 3.05 million passengers, marking a 7.8% increase from last year. Midway's peak day is projected for December 29 with over 51,000 travelers.
CDA Commissioner Jamie L. Rhee commented on the role of Chicago's airports as gateways for millions each holiday season: "Our teams at O’Hare and Midway are dedicated to ensuring holiday journeys are smooth and enjoyable."
Travelers are advised to utilize free Cell Phone Lots at both airports to prevent traffic congestion. The CDA also suggests checking parking availability on FlyChicago.com due to high demand during this period.
For those using rideshare services like Uber and Lyft at O'Hare, pickups are located in Terminal 2's Upper-Level Departures section. At Midway, taxis and limousines can be accessed outside baggage claim areas.
O'Hare has recently added new concessions including Veteran Roasters and Brown Sugar Bakery in Terminal 3. Mobile ordering is available through orderORD.com across all terminals.
Family-friendly amenities include a Family Lounge at O'Hare with play areas for children, while both airports offer nursing rooms for parents traveling with infants.
Holiday decorations will adorn both airports with trees representing various cultural organizations displayed throughout O'Hare's terminals. Travelers should anticipate longer wait times at TSA checkpoints during this busy season but can check real-time updates online.
