The City of Chicago is considering the purchase of 0.7 acres of land near Throop and 59th streets to facilitate mixed-use development in Englewood. This proposal was introduced to the City Council by Mayor Brandon Johnson.
The proposed acquisition includes six vacant lots and a one-story commercial building. These properties would be combined with neighboring city-owned land to form a five-acre site for future development, which will be guided by a community-led solicitation process.
This site has been identified in the "Englewood Agro-Eco District Land Use Plan," which was adopted by the Plan Commission in August 2024. The plan aims to support food-related investments along the nearby Englewood Nature Trail.
The costs associated with acquiring these properties have not yet been determined. Currently, ownership is divided between the Cook County Land Bank and two private owners. Meanwhile, environmental remediation efforts are already underway on adjacent city-owned properties.
