The Art Institute of Chicago is set to present an exhibition titled "Lines of Connection: Drawing and Printmaking" from March 15 to June 1, 2025. This exhibition will feature over 90 works on paper by renowned artists in the Western tradition. It aims to explore the relationship between drawing and printmaking, traditionally seen as separate disciplines.
The exhibition highlights how these two mediums have influenced each other throughout history. It includes traditional forms such as preparatory drawings for prints, printed imitations of drawings, drawn copies of prints, and hybrid works. Jamie Gabbarelli, Prince Trust Associate Curator at the Art Institute of Chicago, stated that the exhibition "challenges modern hierarchical notions of the clear distinction between media."
Notable artists featured in this showcase include Albrecht Dürer, William Blake, Parmigianino, Rembrandt, Peter Paul Rubens, and Maria Sibylla Merian. The exhibition will also display a rare pairing of two hand drawings by Hendrick Goltzius and a Rembrandt drawing inspired by Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper.
Co-organized with the J. Paul Getty Museum and curated by Jamie Gabbarelli, the exhibition receives major support from the Wolfgang Ratjen Foundation in Liechtenstein and additional contributions from an anonymous donor.
