Two historic churches on Chicago's Near West Side are set to receive preservation funding through the Adopt-A-Landmark grants. Mayor Brandon Johnson introduced these grants to the City Council, aiming to support restoration projects for both churches.
The First Baptist Congregational Church, located at 1613 W. Washington Blvd., is slated to receive $1.46 million. This funding will be directed towards restoration work, primarily focusing on its 200-foot steeple. The grant will cover all project expenses for this building, which was completed in the same year as the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 and designated a City landmark on January 21, 1982.
Greater Union Baptist Church, situated at 1956 W. Warren Blvd., is expected to obtain $750,000 for essential restoration work on its exterior masonry. The grant will also cover all project expenses for this structure, one of three surviving churches designed by William Le Baron Jenney and designated a City landmark on April 19, 2023.
The Adopt-A-Landmark grants are intended to aid in the restoration of designated Chicago landmarks citywide. Funding is sourced from the Neighborhood Opportunity Bonus system, which collects voluntary fees from downtown construction projects.
