The Chicago Hounds achieved a 31-18 victory over the Miami Sharks, marking their third win of the season. The match took place on Friday evening, with the Hounds now holding a 3-1 record. Key players contributed to the win, including blindside flanker Mason Flesch who scored a seven-point try. Additional tries were made by openside flanker Mac Jones, replacement forward Conall Boomer, and center Ollie Devoto. Flyhalf Chris Hilsenbeck added nine points through three conversions and one penalty goal in his first start for the team.
Chicago started strong with an early penalty attempt from Hilsenbeck, setting the tone for the game. This initial success was followed by Mac Jones scoring the team's first try of the night after a series of plays by the forward pack. Hilsenbeck's conversion gave Chicago a 10-0 lead within 14 minutes.
Miami responded near the half-hour mark when scrumhalf Mitch Short had a pass intercepted by a Miami defender, leading to a score that brought them within three points after a successful conversion.
Despite Miami's efforts, Chicago maintained dominance in possession and territory during the opening half-hour. Just before halftime, Mason Flesch scored another try for Chicago, extending their lead to 17-7 at halftime.
The second half saw Miami score again but miss their conversion attempt. A penalty against replacement hooker Jackson Zabierek allowed Miami to take their first lead of the night with a successful kick.
In response, Chicago regained control in the final 20 minutes. Conall Boomer scored his first try of the season in the 69th minute, putting Chicago ahead once more. With Hilsenbeck's conversion, they led 24-18 with about ten minutes remaining.
Although Miami had opportunities to shift momentum back in their favor, Chicago's defense remained resilient. Ollie Devoto secured victory with another try in the 76th minute—his second consecutive week scoring—cementing Chicago's win as well as earning them an additional bonus point due to scoring four tries overall.
This victory places Chicago at first place in Eastern Conference standings with 15 points. Their next challenge is against Old Glory DC at SeatGeek Stadium this Saturday afternoon.
