Sunshine Gospel Ministries is set to develop a community center in Washington Park, aided by the proposed sale of 4.1 acres of city-owned land. The proposal was presented to the City Council by Mayor Brandon Johnson.

The new community center, with an estimated cost of $36.9 million, will span 77,050 square feet at 6016 S. King Drive. Planned facilities include a gymnasium, cafe, youth programming rooms, offices, and outdoor athletic amenities.

The land involved in the transaction comprises 16 parcels located at 345-79 E. 60th St., 6000-50 S. King Drive, and 6001-49 S. Calumet Ave., with each parcel priced at $1.

Earlier this year, Mayor Johnson expressed support for the project through a $5 million Community Development Grant.
