The former home of WAX TRAX! Records in Lincoln Park is set to be designated as an official Chicago landmark. This proposal was introduced to the City Council by Mayor Brandon Johnson.
The building, located at 2449 N. Lincoln Ave., is a two-story structure designed in the Renaissance Revival style and was built in the 1880s. In 1978, WAX TRAX! opened its doors here, becoming an international hub for diverse music genres such as punk, new wave, rockabilly, and dance. The store later launched its own record label and played a significant role in establishing Chicago as the birthplace of industrial music.
Before closing in 1993, WAX TRAX! also sold clothing, fanzines, concert tickets, and other items that made it a popular spot for musicians and music enthusiasts.
The proposed landmark status would ensure protection for all exterior elevations of the building.
